Collaborative Pianist

Sheryl has extensive collaborative experience, having worked with musicians of all “stripes” — strings, woodwinds, brass, vocal, choral. She began as the accompanist for voice classes and Suzuki string classes and as pianist for the Wind Ensemble as an undergraduate at Michigan State University while studying accompanying with Deborah Moriarty. As a Masters student she performed some of the pillars of strings + piano chamber music, and accompanied extensively for the string department and for Deborah Richtmeyer's saxophone studio. In the years since, besides performing frequently as a free-lance co-recitalist and accompanist, Sheryl has served as staff accompanist at Hope College (1997-2008), where she performed with instrumental faculty and students of all instrumental families, and accompanied both the performing and college choirs.

She frequently collaborates with Diane Penning, soprano; string and brass players from the Grand Rapids and West Michigan symphonies; string and woodwind colleagues on the Interlochen Arts Camp faculty; and fellow pianists Ken Bos and Phil Pletcher. She is one of the long-standing accompanists for the Falcone International Low Brass competition at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp; and is the official pianist for Voca Lyrica, a Big Rapids-based choral group conducted by Ginny Kerwin. Audio samples of solo and collaborative performance can be found on the Bio page. Her work with the Grand Valley State University International Trumpet Seminar and the unique chamber group Aries Trio has led her to be a bit of a trumpet specialist, but she is always eager to work with other musicians -- as a co-recitalist, or as accompanist for students on degree recitals, juries, solo and ensemble, etc. Her repertoire is extensive; the complete list is available by clicking on the link in the right hand column.
